Russell Crowe's 'Art of Divorce' Auction Hauls In $3.7 Million in Memorabilia -- Including His Jock Strap
Russell Crowe's bizarre "Art of Divorce" auction hauled in more than $3.7 million in memorabilia, antiques, art and jewelry on Saturday -- including an $8,540 jock strap.
The auction coincided with the finalization of his divorce from Australian singer Danielle Spencer, with whom he starred in The Crossing and married in 2003. They have two sons, Charles and Tennyson, but separated in 2012. As part of that divorce, he arranged the "Art of Divorce" auction.
“We’ve been separated over five years now, our divorce should be finalized around the time of the auction," he told Australia's Daily Telegraphnewspaper before the auction. "Just as we collaborate on the upbringing of our kids, it’s easy for us to work together on something like this. I think she feels the same way I do in regards to just moving on things that help create space for the future.”
The auction included 227 items ranging from jewelry and watches to cars, motorcycles, guitars, cricket memorabilia and tons of items from some of his most famous films. Up for action, for example, was armor and weapons he used as Maximus in the film Gladiator, which sold for about $300,000 combined. There was also two life-sized horse props (they sold for $6,710 each) and a fully functioning Roman chariot (sold for $79,300) from the film. There were outfits from Master and Commander, and 3:10 to Yuma and perhaps the most bizarre item up for action: a brown, leather jockstrap from Cinderella Man that sold for a whopping $8,540.
"Accompanied by a letter from Russell Crowe stating his ownership," the Sotheby's auction noted, just in case you really need to prove its authenticity.
He also sold a dinosaur skull for $79,300.
In the end, the auction brought in $3,731,553 total -- not a bad haul, Crowe had to admit.
"In case anyone is interested ... $3.7m at the coal face and around $350k of conversations ongoing ... and a bunch of stuff I didn’t really want to sell coming home," Crowe wrote on Twitter after the auction. "Not a bad hourly rate for a 5 hour shift . Hope you are happy and busy."
