Robin Roberts 'So Heartbroken' Over Monteith Death

The death of Glee star Cory Monteith is still weighing heavily on the minds of the late actor's Hollywood peers, including Good Morning America host Robin Roberts, who tells ET she is "heartbroken" over the tragic events of this past weekend.

Though she did not personally know Monteith, Roberts said that the loss of a young, promising life was terribly devastating to her.

"Many of us, we just wanted to hope and believe [that he would recover from addiction]," she explained. "I know that he had just recently put himself back in rehab, and it just tells you … how hard it is, relapsing and things like that, but what a talent. What an absolute talent. I was so heartbroken when I heard the news this weekend."

Since undergoing bone marrow transplant surgery in 2012, Roberts' health has suffered a few setbacks. Regardless, she remains thankful for her current strength and wellbeing, encouraging one and all to embrace life and forgo drugs.

"[Heroin is] a problem around the country and it's not isolated here in Hollywood, unfortunately. It's something we have to come to grips with, we have to identify it and try and move forward and try and give them reason why not to do that," said Roberts. "There's a silver lining in everything, even if you're going through a hard time. As my mama said, 'Everybody's got something.' We've all got something and to find the meaning behind it, to be a purpose and service to others."

Later during the ESPY's ESPN broadcast, hosted by Jon Hamm on Wednesday, the newswoman was awarded with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. LeBron James presented the statue to Roberts which honors persons who "reflect the spirit of Arthur Ashe, possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost."
