Warning: spoilers ahead for Scream VI, do not proceed if you haven't watched!

The <a href="https://www.etonline.com/movies/scream" rel="" target="_blank">Scream franchise</a> first launched in 1996 from screenwriter Kevin Williamson and the late director Wes Craven. Five sequels and nearly 30 years later, Ghostface is more popular now than ever --&nbsp;thanks in part to the new creative team, Radio Silence, who took over ahead of last year’s successful reboot.

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, most known for their witty 2019 slasher Ready or Not, were at the helm again for an <a href="https://www.etonline.com/josh-segarra-talks-easter-egg-filled-scream-6-and-the-other-two-season-3-exclusive-197576" rel="" target="_blank">Easter egg-filled</a>&nbsp;sixth entry, and this time they held nothing back as they <a href="https://www.etonline.com/scream-vi-cast-reveals-how-new-york-city-amps-things-up-for-the-slasher-franchise-exclusive-200134" rel="" target="_blank">moved the action</a> from Woodsboro to New York City.

In <a href="https://www.etonline.com/movies/scream-vi" rel="" target="_blank">Scream VI</a>, Ghostface targets the core four survivors -- Samantha Carpenter (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/melissa-barrera" rel="" target="_blank">Melissa Barrera</a>), her sister, Tara (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/jenna-ortega" rel="" target="_blank">Jenna Ortega</a>), and twins Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/jasmin-savoy-brown" rel="" target="_blank">Jasmin Savoy Brown</a> and <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/mason-gooding" rel="" target="_blank">Mason Gooding</a>, respectively) -- who were first introduced in Scream (2022).&nbsp;This time, they're joined by a new group of friends played by Devyn Nekoda, Jack Champion,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/josh-segarra" rel="" target="_blank">Josh Segarra</a> and Liana Liberato.

For the first time in the 27-year franchise, Sidney Prescott <a href="https://www.etonline.com/scream-vi-cast-reflects-on-neve-campbell-and-david-arquettes-absence-in-new-sequel-exclusive-200391" rel="" target="_blank">does not appear</a> in the film due to a salary dispute with actress <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/neve-campbell" rel="" target="_blank">Neve Campbell</a>. Also sitting this one out is <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/david-arquette" rel="" target="_blank">David Arquette</a> following the controversial decision to kill off fan-favorite Dewey Riley in Scream 5. Despite those absences, original star <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/courteney-cox" target="_blank">Courteney Cox</a> returns as Gale Weathers in her <a href="https://www.etonline.com/courteney-cox-reflects-on-scream-legacy-and-her-future-in-the-franchise-exclusive-200379" rel="" target="_blank">most intense Ghostface encounter</a> yet, and <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/hayden-panettiere" rel="" target="_blank">Hayden Panettiere</a> reprises her role as Kirby Reed, who <a href="https://www.etonline.com/hayden-panettiere-on-returning-to-the-screen-with-scream-vi-and-kirbys-fate-in-scream-4-exclusive" rel="" target="_blank">last appeared</a> in 2011’s Scream 4.&nbsp;

“These movies have everything you want in a movie inside of them,” Gillet told ET. “They’re scary, they’re funny, they’re heartfelt. Great characters at the center of them and that’s a ride that we’ll always show up for.”&nbsp;

With Scream VI earning $44 million at the&nbsp;biggest box office during its opening weekend -- the best for the&nbsp;franchise --&nbsp;it’s safe to assume this duo will return to helm a seventh entry written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Ahead of the release, ET caught up with Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet to talk about the many homages to past films, killing off legacy characters and which fan-favorite they’d like to bring back next.&nbsp;

ET: Scream VI pays homage to so many of the previous films, especially Scream 2. Talk about matching the suspense and tension of the recording studio and the cop car scenes. Why did you want to do that?&nbsp;

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: I think we look to that as sort of a guiding light for how to follow up a movie that you're proud of that people like and I think you know, one of the things we took from Scream 2 besides the setting of college and stuff, what was really cool to us was those set pieces in Scream 2 are so iconic, and those are some of our favorite in the entire franchise. And so to have the opportunity on this one to do something similar and really blow those out. That was a big part of it.&nbsp;

Tyler Gillet: Those are like the two touchstones for us. That is a perfect example of how Kevin&nbsp;and Wes were always stacking one obstacle on top of another.&nbsp;

Now can we expect if you do another, will Scream 7 take notes from Scream 3 then? Will Hollywood play a significant role like it did in that entry?&nbsp;

TG: That's a good question. We're not really sure what the path would be for 7 but I think built into the DNA of what this franchise is, they always have to take a risk and reinvent themselves. I think it's why 5 and 6 feel so different. Everything that we did in 5 we wanted to really challenge in 6 and so I imagine Guy and James are probably holed up somewhere writing right now and have a big weird plan for Scream 7. We have no idea what it is. &nbsp;

After killing off Dewey in Scream 5, did you ever consider killing off another legacy character in this one? With Gale,&nbsp;was there a version shot where she doesn't pull through or was it always the plan to keep both her and Kirby&nbsp;alive again?&nbsp;

MB: It was always the plan to keep them alive. You know I think we still have residual…

TG: Sadness.

MB: Sadness. &nbsp;

TG: Guilt...&nbsp;

MB: …About Dewey you know, we felt that that was really important for that movie, but for this one we talked about this as a secret feel good movie a lot and that was a part of it.

Sidney gets mentioned a few times throughout the film, you guys give her a happy ending. With Neve Campbell deciding not to return, how much did that change the overall vision? Was it an overhaul to change a killer reveal or who ends up dying? Was any of that tweaked because of her not returning?&nbsp;

TG: No, the bones of the story were very much the same. And I think that one of the things that we're really proud of is that there are echoes of Sidney in this movie and I don't think there's a way for there to not be echoes of her in any movie going forward. I think that you know, she's the first thing we fell in love with in the franchise and I hope that that love and care for her characters is present in this as well.

Neve did tell ET that on her end the door is still open she would come back potentially. So if you do a Scream 7 are you guys leaving the door open for Sidney or because you gave her the happy ending you don't want to go down that path?&nbsp;

TG: Dude, we brought back Billy Loomis as a hallucination. Anything is possible.&nbsp;

Let's talk about the core four&nbsp;because a lot of people's reactions after seeing the film are that the core four at this point kind of rivals the original trio, you care about them just as much. Talk about creating that dynamic and keeping all of them alive as well and why that was so important. I was thrilled that Chad&nbsp;pulled through after a close call with Ghostface.&nbsp;

MB: We pulled a Dewey! You know, it's what we're saying about this being a secret feel good movie, which our read of the first movie is very similar where there's the original trio and of course Randy [Jamie Kennedy], they all survived and that's really special to us. And I think it's why it's so rewatchable and why we all love it. And Guy and James when they're writing the script for this, they were able to really lean into the strengths of all of those actors, because we've worked with them on the last one and it was so special to watch their friendships off camera being mirrored on camera, you know, and they've gone through something in real life and now they're going through something in the movie with Ghostface. Those scenes to us are the most special in the whole movie because there's something so palpable and authentic about it. And that's what we got from Wes and Kevin, you have to make the characters first.&nbsp;

TG: It's one of the benefits of this movie happening so quickly after 5 that we find the characters so shortly after the events of the last movie, and they're in that really weird messy stage of dealing with the events of 5 you don't have to reintroduce some new conflict right into those characters lives it's really immediate, that proximity created some immediacy in just what's happening emotionally that we thought was really interesting to explore.

You brought back Skeet Ulrich as Billy again as a hallucination, who else from the five previous films would you want to bring back, whether alive or dead?&nbsp;

MB: Parker Posey [from Scream 3]. &nbsp;

TG: Yeah, that's a good answer. I mean, look, I know I'm gonna step in it but…

MB: You're gonna say Stu!&nbsp;

TG: Stu Macher [<a href="https://www.etonline.com/scream-vi-team-responds-to-those-stu-macher-rumors-and-matthew-lillards-possible-return-exclusive" rel="" target="_blank">Matthew Lillard in Scream</a>].&nbsp;

MB: [Laughs]

TG: Just full Star Wars Force ghost all of them.

'Scream VI' Directors on Neve Campbell, Sequel Homages and Who Else They'd Like to Bring Back (Exclusive)

It’s been 30 years since Tony Todd first uttered the words, "Be my victim,"&nbsp;to a terrified Virginia Madsen in 1992's horror cult classic <a href="https://www.etonline.com/movies/candyman" rel="" target="_blank">Candyman</a>.&nbsp;

Based on Clive Barker's 1985 short story and brought to the screen by writer-director Bernard Rose, the supernatural slasher garnered three sequels, including Jordan Peele's 2021 installment, and was a hit with critics and audiences alike, especially within the Black community.&nbsp;

The film follows skeptical graduate student&nbsp;Helen Lyle (Madsen), as she researches an urban legend in a Chicago housing project, Cabrini-Green. She learns about the Candyman (Todd), a hook-wielding figure that local residents believe to be responsible for a recent murder. Soon a mysterious man begins stalking her and she fears the legend may be all too real.&nbsp;

To commemorate the original film's anniversary, ET reunited Madsen and Todd --&nbsp;who have remained close friends in the decades since filming --&nbsp;to revisit the film’s lasting legacy. "We were saying, when I got here, about how amazing it is 30 years later that it's still in the forefront of people's&nbsp;minds, particularly fans,"&nbsp;Todd said as he and Madsen spoke with ET's Kevin Frazier.&nbsp;

"It's a classic scary tale told by the fireside and we knew that it was that way when we were first making it, so it wasn't surprising that it kept living on and on and on,"&nbsp;Madsen noted.&nbsp;

"Whenever we appear together in fandom events, the fans are lined up around the block,"&nbsp;Todd said, before Madsen quipped, "They're lined up for you."

Todd has played the titular character in every Candyman adaptation, and his frightening yet seductive performance has had fans hooked since the moment he first appeared on the screen. Surprisingly, it's not until 40 minutes into the first one, after Helen recites "Candyman" five times in the mirror --&nbsp;a part of the myth that's been effectively recreated in every film since. &nbsp;

"I get so many stories at autograph tables about people doing challenges and mirrors and stuff,"&nbsp;Todd recounted, referring to the film's folklore that results in him appearing in the mirror behind you. "That’s what keeps the film alive because it gets passed generationally."

While Madsen's character is a strong non-believer in the legend (until it's too late for her), the actress has been superstitious of his existence since the very beginning. She even told ET during the original press tour that she refused to say his name five times in the mirror. "I started doing the Candyman thing and then I said, 'No, no, no, if there is any of this going on, I don’t want it anywhere close to me!'"&nbsp;Madsen told ET in 1992.&nbsp;

In 2022, not much has changed for the actress, with Madsen telling ET now, "I have never said it five times in the mirror, even in the movie, just in case."

But what is scarier than the myth himself? The bees. In fact, 200,000 of them were used for the film's most infamous scene, when a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUZW8QOszUQ" rel="" target="_blank">swarm of bees</a> fall out of Candyman's mouth as he leans down to kiss Helen. Unlike CGI-heavy movies of today, the scene was completed with practical effects.&nbsp;

"The bees were the worst nemesis,"&nbsp;Todd was quick to note, before Madsen asked, "You got stung how many times?"

"I had a great lawyer at the time and we got paid,"&nbsp;Todd pointed out. The actor had a clause that earned him an estimated $1,000 per bee sting. "So I didn't mind it, I'm going like, 'Bring it on!'&nbsp;And it only totaled to 27 [stings]."

It could have been worse if it were not for an unusual object repurposed just for the scene. "We had a dental dam so they couldn't go further down [my mouth],"&nbsp;Todd revealed.&nbsp;

"The bees had their own trailer!"&nbsp;Madsen pointed out. "It doesn't really make you feel confident when there's a big net cage set up around our scene to protect the crew and an ambulance standing by."

Madsen, meanwhile, is deathly allergic to bees, making the scene even more dangerous to film. "That's why they had the paramedics on the set, which didn't make me feel very confident. But the bees that were on me were baby bees so they can sting but they said they are less likely to,"&nbsp;Madsen said.&nbsp;

"Then you had to sit for a good 20-25 minutes while [the bee wrangler] vacuums them off you,"&nbsp;Madsen said as Todd chimed in to reveal "that's when they get feisty."&nbsp;

In the end, the effort was worth it. "You know, actors are trained to be fearless, so it was a fearless moment and it stood the test of time," Todd eloquently noted.&nbsp;

Something else that stood the test of time is the cultural and racial significance of the film. "It was well worth it and not just the bonus check, but being one of the first African Americans in a horror film that does not enslave us,"&nbsp;Todd said. "When I first read it, I looked for those traps.&nbsp;I wanted to make sure that if you’re going to be one of the first significant Black actors in a horror film, you better make sure that it's complete, that it tells a story from beginning&nbsp;to middle and end, and that’s what I saw in the script."

The film also used real gang members from the Chicago area as extras in the Cabrini-Green setting. "There's a couple of scenes that you see actual gang members and for them it was the most honest living they had done up until that point,"&nbsp;Todd reflected. "They got away from whatever their day-to-day routine was and they were making a film."

Despite the cultural significance, the film still had its roadblocks and critics along the way. Todd and Madsen both recounted a scene that never saw the light of day involving their characters dancing a "beautiful"&nbsp;waltz. "[The studio] cut that out because they felt that it was too intimate at that point,"&nbsp;Todd noted.&nbsp;

"I think we both felt that was like the most beautiful thing we did because the thing about Candyman is he's a poet and a painter and an artist, he's so romantic,"&nbsp;Madsen shared. "Because of our chemistry, the more that became apparent, the less they wanted of it, and yeah, it makes me mad."

"One day, maybe it'll show up in the reprint,"&nbsp;Todd remarked, adding that he knows the footage exists somewhere.&nbsp;

Fortunately, the Candyman franchise is more alive than ever <a href="https://www.etonline.com/jordan-peele-and-nia-dacostas-candyman-injects-new-life-into-a-30-year-old-franchise-171071" rel="" target="_blank">following Peele's sequel</a> (also titled&nbsp;Candyman), which <a href="https://www.etonline.com/how-antebellum-lovecraft-country-and-more-horror-stories-are-centering-black-experiences-153705" target="_blank">heavily leaned into</a> its racial themes. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris and Colman Domingo, it was&nbsp;directed by Nia DaCosta, making her the first Black female director <a href="https://www.etonline.com/nia-dacostas-candyman-becomes-first-no-1-film-directed-by-a-black-woman-171225" rel="" target="_blank">to debut a film</a> in the number one spot at the box office.&nbsp;

Both Madsen and Todd were participants in the film, with Madsen providing a voice cameo and Todd briefly appearing onscreen in the closing moments.&nbsp;"I got the phone call from Jordan and he explained to me what was going on and it was one of the most cheeriest phone calls I ever had in my life because I knew that he cared,"&nbsp;Todd shared, while Madsen added, "They gave a lot of respect to both of us."&nbsp;

Plans for another Candyman film have started but the question remains if Todd will return again. Noting it is all just "whispers"&nbsp;right now, Todd said, "We shall see, it all depends on the set of circumstances."

It seems hard to imagine a Candyman film without Todd participating in some form, but regardless, the original continues to live on forever for fans. "I'm proud of the film, I'm glad to have been a part of it, it's part of my legacy and I've been working nonstop for 30 years.&nbsp;It's&nbsp;a good thing,"&nbsp;a grateful Todd said.&nbsp;

'Candyman': Tony Todd, Virginia Madsen on Those Bees and Film's Racial Impact 30 Years Later (Exclusive)

Following the recent success&nbsp;of <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/tv/never-have-i-ever" target="_blank">Netflix's Never Have I Ever</a> and <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/tv/the-sex-lives-of-college-girls" target="_blank">HBO Max's Sex Lives of College Girls</a>, both of which&nbsp;feature&nbsp;leading Indian cast members,&nbsp;Kaling is now the executive producer on the South Asian family dramedy&nbsp;Definition Please.&nbsp;Ahead of its debut on Netflix, only ET has the exclusive premiere of the first official trailer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For Day, first working with <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/issa-rae" target="_blank">Issa Rae</a> on her web series,&nbsp;Awkward Black Girl -- which served as inspiration for Insecure -- eventually led to her feature directorial debut. “We were all inspired by being on that web series and we were starting to write our own stories,” Day <a href="https://www.etonline.com/insecure-actress-sujata-day-on-how-issa-rae-inspired-her-directorial-debut-exclusive-152150" target="_blank">previously&nbsp;told ET</a>. “Issa said, 'I am writing my Black girl story, you have to write your brown girl story.'”

Audiences will see plenty of other familiar faces popping up in the film's trailer, including Lalaine (Lizzie McGuire), Jake Choi (Single Parents) and <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/tv/levar-burton" target="_blank">Levar Burton</a> (Reading Rainbow), in supporting roles.&nbsp;

The film garnered a slew of awards during the festival circuit, including Outstanding Directorial Debut for Day at the South Asian Film Festival of America and Best Lead Actor for Rajan at the NYC South Asian Film Festival.&nbsp;

The film also tackles mental health, a topic that can sometimes carry a stigma in the community. For Rajan, who also spoke to ET, portraying an Indian American man living with borderline personality disorder was a delicate process. “Sometimes being vulnerable is seen as weakness in Asian communities. I really wanted to dial into all of that nuance and detail to play a character that was as authentic as possible,” he said. “His denial of his sickness and his confrontation with his sister, it was all ultimately about finding the humanity within the South Asian story.”

Ahead of its wide release, Day has already seen her film inspiring future generations. “I have heard from young brown girls saying this has inspired them to write their own story and that’s all I can ask for,” she shared. “I want to inspire as I have been inspired by people who came before me and that was the goal of making this movie, for all the little brown girls whose stories haven’t been told yet.”

Like it did in 1996, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/movies/scream" target="_blank">Scream</a> starts with a wrong number. But this time it’s <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/jenna-ortega" target="_blank">Jenna Ortega</a> on the receiving end instead of <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/drew-barrymore" target="_blank">Drew Barrymore</a>, who famously starred in one of the most shocking moments in cinematic history. “The Drew Barrymore ‘Casey Becker’ scene is one of my favorite scenes of all time across the board in cinema,” Ortega, who plays Tara Carpenter in the <a href="https://www.etonline.com/scream-5-everything-we-know-about-the-anticipated-new-sequel-exclusive-155135" target="_blank">newest installment</a>, told ET’s Matt Cohen.

Over <a href="https://www.etonline.com/scream-25-years-later-the-og-cast-reflects-on-its-legacy-exclusive-176801" target="_blank">25 years ago</a>, a then 21-year-old Barrymore, who had been promoted as the original film’s lead, was brutally murdered on-screen after just 13 minutes, proving anything can happen in a Scream movie and no character is safe.

Now, a new generation of young characters – Sam Carpenter (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/melissa-barrera" target="_blank">Melissa Barerra</a>), Wes Hicks (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/dylan-minnette" target="_blank">Dylan Minnette</a>), Mindy Meeks-Martin (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/scream-star-jasmin-savoy-brown-on-playing-the-film-franchises-first-queer-character-exclusive" target="_blank">Jasmin Savoy Brown</a>) and others – find themselves the target of the Ghostface killer in the highly anticipated fifth entry to the $600 million franchise, aptly titled, Scream. A remake, reboot and sequel all in one, the 2022 movie reunites the original surviving trio of Sidney Prescott (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/neve-campbell" target="_blank">Neve Campbell</a>), Gale Weathers (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/courteney-cox" target="_blank">Courteney Cox</a>) and Dewey Riley (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/david-arquette" target="_blank">David Arquette</a>) as it follows the gang of newcomers trying to unmask their latest tormentor.

At the center of Ghostface’s first phone call, continuing a long tradition of stunning cold open attacks, is Ortega, who completely understood the pressure of reimagining the original sequence for longtime fans and newcomers alike. “It could not have been done more perfectly so it’s hard because I know that all the Scream films since have been sort of a reiteration or kind of play on that scene so it’s wanting to make this one somewhat different,” the 19-year-old actress&nbsp;said. 
&nbsp; 
“I wanted to make it my own but I also wanted to make sure that the acknowledgement and respect for Drew, Wes [Craven] and Kevin [Williamson] was there,” Ortega remarked of the original film’s director and screenwriter. Craven directed the first four entries in the franchise before his death in 2015. Williamson served as an executive producer on the new entry. 
&nbsp; 
ET sat down with Barrymore <a href="https://www.etonline.com/features/205294_scream_20_years_later_neve_campbell_and_cast_share_untold_stories" target="_blank">back in 1996</a> ahead of the original film’s release and she clearly knew how <a href="https://www.etonline.com/drew-barrymore-reprises-her-scream-character-to-show-what-shed-be-like-if-she-lived-155266" target="_blank">iconic that opening scene was</a> from the very beginning. "It was one of the best written scenes I’ve ever read in my life. I mean what Kevin Williamson did with this script is just, it’s a masterpiece," she gushed. 
&nbsp; 
The latest Scream aims to pay homage to that opening scene as evidenced by the film’s trailer. Ortega plays a local Woodsboro teen who is home alone when she receives a menacing phone call from none other than Ghostface (voiced by Roger Jackson). What follows is a brutal cat-and-mouse chase through the home – including a tech-savy killer who can virtually unlock her security system – until she is dragged away by the killer.

Audiences will have to see the film in theaters to learn Tara’s fate, but Ortega knows just how important this scene is to the fans. “I know that people are very critical because that set such a standard being the first scene of the franchise and it being so iconic, that’s something that I think the Scream community critiques a lot and is very hardcore.&nbsp;I just really didn’t wanna let anyone down,” she humbly admitted. 
&nbsp; 
If fans have any doubts that Ortega put her all into this, the physical toll the scene took on her body should offer some reassurance. “I had some of the biggest bruises of my life, I had this bruise on my hip that kind of looked like a tennis ball from the side because it was so swollen… I had matching bruises on each of my elbow bones… I had a couple on the side of my thigh and some on my knees, but that’s all,” Ortega quipped. 
&nbsp; 
Don’t expect Ortega to complain about those onset injuries though. “I like getting bruised up when you do stunts like that because then you really give it your all and any reaction you have, if you do end up hurting yourself, is authentic and real,” she shared. 
&nbsp; 
While nothing can live up to the original, Ortega feels confident everyone brought their A-game to this project. "We all had so much respect for the work [that Craven] had done. Everyone wanted to put their best foot forward and make someone proud, I think it really gave us the best possible outcome of the film and knowing everyone tried and knowing love was there, it affects the atmosphere on set and really makes or breaks a film."

'Scream' Star Jenna Ortega on the Pressures of Filming That Opening Scene (Exclusive)

Sidney and Gale are <a href="https://www.etonline.com/scream-go-behind-the-scenes-with-the-new-and-og-cast-exclusive-176690" target="_blank">back at it again</a>! Twenty-five&nbsp;years after first battling Ghostface in the 1996&nbsp;horror classic&nbsp;<a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/movies/scream" target="_blank">Scream</a>, the duo is reuniting on the big screen to take on a new psycho killer who has donned the mask to target a new crop of teens.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/neve-campbell" target="_blank">Neve Campbell</a> and <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/courteney-cox" target="_blank">Courteney Cox</a> reprise their roles in the <a href="https://www.etonline.com/scream-5-everything-we-know-about-the-anticipated-new-sequel-exclusive-155135" target="_blank">highly anticipated fifth entry</a> in the $600 million franchise --&nbsp;once again titled Scream --&nbsp;but don't expect these final girls to be at each other's throats like in previous entries.&nbsp;

"We had a lot of time where the two characters did not enjoy each other and the audiences loved that," Campbell reflected to ET's Matt Cohen. "I think the audiences are equally gonna love us sort of coming together and being strong women together," she added.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
Fans may remember in the original Scream and its 1997 sequel, Scream 2, Campbell's final girl, Sidney, and Cox's cutthroat reporter, Gale, didn't exactly see eye to eye, with the former punching the news anchor to the ground in both films.&nbsp;

Now, in 2022's Scream, the two will be teaming up together to take down Ghostface, as teased by the <a href="https://www.etonline.com/scream-trailer-ghostface-is-back-and-so-is-sidney-prescott-173591" target="_blank">sequel's trailer</a>.&nbsp;"You ready?" asks Sidney after loading up their firearms, before Gale quips,&nbsp;"For this? Never."&nbsp;

"I think it's great.&nbsp;I mean, it's fun in the sense that it's transitioned," Campbell remarked to ET. Cox added that she is "loving" the new dynamic between these characters.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Unsurprisingly, the actresses' personal bond has also evolved since first working together 25 years ago.&nbsp;"We both became parents," Cox noted as to what has&nbsp;changed the most for them both.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
Cox welcomed daughter Coco in 2004 with ex-husband <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/david-arquette" target="_blank">David Arquette</a> (who also reprises his role of lovable Dewey Riley in the new sequel). Campbell shares two sons, Caspian and Raynor, with longtime boyfriend, actor JJ Feild.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
"Yes, we're both moms [now] so that's obviously a big one," Campbell echoed before adding, "We've been making these movies together for 25 years so we're always super, super happy to see each other when we get the chance to."&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
"I think we're closer though in a weird way because we're older now," Cox commented. "I think our conversations and our bond is for some reason, because we've known each so long, it feels,&nbsp;I don't know, I feel, 'Yeah aw,'" she added before grabbing Campbell's hand affectionately beside her.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
"We like each other," Campbell summarized with a laugh.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
The admiration for one another is shared by co-star and newcomer to the franchise, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/melissa-barrera" target="_blank">Melissa Barrera</a>.&nbsp;"It was like a masterclass in acting and professionalism and longevity," Barrera shared about working alongside Campbell and Cox. "These women have such successful careers because of the way they are when they work and getting to see that up close is just the best lesson that I could've gotten."&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
"It was just beautiful energy.&nbsp;They say never meet your heroes because it can be disappointing but these two are even better than anyone could imagine," Barrera concluded.&nbsp;

Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox on Their Close Bond After 25 Years of 'Scream' (Exclusive)

It’s been 25 years since since Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox first faced off against the infamous Ghostface killer in 1996’s horror-classic, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/movies/scream" target="_blank">Scream</a>.

Directed by the late Wes Craven, the genre-bending slasher became an instant hit with critics and audiences alike. Three sequels and a television spinoff later, the franchise -- which &nbsp;grossed more than 600 million worldwide -- is continuing its legacy with a fifth film, aptly titled&nbsp;Scream, slated to hit theaters Jan.&nbsp;14, 2022.

Paramount Pictures also debuted a new Scream featurette titled 'For Wes' to honor the late director on the film's anniversary.

Campbell, Arquette and Cox are all returning for the highly anticipated sequel -- joined by newcomers Melissa Barrera (In the Heights), Jack Quaid (The Boys), Dylan Minnette (13 Reasons Why) and Jenna Ortega (You), some of whom were not even born when the original debuted!

ET was exclusively on the set of the latest entry, where the OG cast looked back on the original film and reflected on revisiting the franchise all these years later.

“Scream will always be a classic,” Cox remarked, “I want [the fans] to know they’re going to experience a movie that’s very similar to the first one,” she teased of the upcoming sequel. “It’s scarier, probably, than it was 25 years ago. So it’s up to date in a different way.”

At the time of the original, the cast and crew had no idea the franchise would ever go on this long. “I would’ve said you’re crazy!” Campbell admitted with a laugh.

“Never in a million years would I expect it to explode the way it did and then continue the way it has,” original screenwriter Kevin Williamson said. Williamson also penned the second and fourth installments, and is on board as executive producer for the fifth. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick wrote the latest entry.

“Twenty-five years and doing another Scream, it's really an incredible opportunity to play a character that long,” Arquette said of Dewey Riley. "This is just little snapshots through my life that really had a huge impact on me.”

“It’s an honor to play a really strong woman who is not a victim and who overcomes challenges,” Campbell gushed of her final girl heroine, Sidney Prescott. “I’m always really touched when fans come up to me and tell me that they’ve been inspired somehow or found strength from watching these films.&nbsp;As an actor, it’s always great to be able to give that to people.”

“It’s so much fun to play Gale Weathers,” Cox said of her iconic character. “She’s got definitely two sides to her --&nbsp;very competitive and ruthless, and then she also has a heart.”

Cox, who was starring on Friends at the time, had to fight for the tough-as-nails role. “I wrote a letter to Wes Craven --&nbsp;I think I was always known as being so sweet -- and I said, ‘I really can be a b**ch!” Cox previously told ET.

It hit Campbell that she was playing Sidney again after “seeing Courteney and David the first time, and then of course, walking on to the set that looks identical to Stu’s house at Woodsboro” -- referencing Stu Macher’s (Matthew Lillard) home, which served as the backdrop for the thrilling climax of the original film and will be making its return for the first time in the upcoming sequel.

“This is the first Scream film without Wes and it’s been really tough,” Arquette admitted. Craven, who directed every previous entry in the franchise, died&nbsp;in 2015 -- but the master of suspense’s presence will definitely be felt.

“The movie is a love letter to Wes, it’s a tribute in a beautiful way.&nbsp;They have a really nice tribute planned for him and I don’t want to give it away but the movie is 100 percent&nbsp;dedicated to Wes Craven,” Williamson promised.

Campbell echoed those statements, telling ET that the directors, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, were huge fans of Craven. “They expressed to me that they are filmmakers because of Wes so they really have directed this movie in keeping with Wes’ energy and in honor of him and I think they’ve done an amazing job.”

Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin landed the film following the success of their 2019 thriller, Ready or Not.

The fate of the surviving trio is being kept tightly under wraps --&nbsp;as always with any Scream film --&nbsp;but the actors believe the franchise still has staying power regardless.

“I actually do think Scream will be able to live on,” Arquette replied when asked about the film’s legacy. “When you start something like Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven did, and really grounded it in this iconic character (Ghostface) that’s now sort of on the Mount Rushmore of horror characters, you know it will have life.”

“It would seem people aren’t getting bored of these films,” Campbell shared with a laugh. “I know when I see fans they’re always asking me when we’re going to make another one.”

The original Scream was released by Paramount Home Entertainment for the first time on 4K Ultra HD and in a newly remastered Blu-ray on Oct 19.

The fifth Scream is only in theaters Jan. 14, 2022.

'Scream' 25 Years Later: The OG Cast Reflects on Its Legacy (Exclusive)

Get ready to scream again. It’s been nearly 25 years since <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/neve-campbell" target="_blank">Neve Campbell</a>, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/david-arquette" target="_blank">David Arquette</a> and <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/courteney-cox" target="_blank">Courteney Cox</a> first encountered the infamous Ghostface killer in 1996’s genre-bending smash hit <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/movies/scream" target="_blank">Scream</a>, and now three sequels and a television spinoff later, the original trio of stars will return once again for Scream 5. Here is everything to know about the latest installment in the slasher franchise.&nbsp;

<h3>Returning Stars</h3>

Filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, the highly anticipated slasher sequel was first announced back in May 2020 along with the news that Arquette would be returning as <a href="https://www.etonline.com/david-arquette-is-officially-returning-for-the-scream-reboot-146770" target="_blank">Dewey Riley</a>. By late July, Cox had signed on to reprise her role as news reporter <a href="https://www.etonline.com/courteney-cox-is-officially-reprising-scream-role-as-gale-weathers-150592" target="_blank">Gale Weathers</a> with Campbell later confirming she would be back as the franchise’s central heroine,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.etonline.com/neve-campbell-confirms-shes-returning-for-scream-5-152805" target="_blank">Sidney Prescott</a>, in September, a mere month before production began.&nbsp;

“I am excited to be stepping back into Sidney’s shoes and seeing Courteney and David,” Campbell told ET earlier this month. “These movies mean so much to me for my life and career and they are always a blast to do, so it should be fun,” the 47-year-old actress added, before revealing she would be leaving “soon” for North Carolina.&nbsp;

“It’s a really fun project,” Arquette said after his casting was announced. “This will be the fifth film and it’s really a special opportunity to show a character’s growth and sort of where they are now.”&nbsp;

According to Arquette, that excitement is shared by Cox. “She thinks it’ll be fun, she loves playing that character too,” he said of his ex-wife.&nbsp;“I love when they write her character as sort of closer to Scream where she’s a bit cutthroat and will do anything to get the story,” he marveled of Cox’s fiery news reporter character.&nbsp;

The pair met on the set of the original Scream and despite their off-screen split, when audiences last saw their characters, they were happily married to one another. It is not yet known what the status of the characters’ relationship will be in the next installment. “I’m sworn to secrecy,” Arquette giggled when prodded for more details.&nbsp;

Another familiar face making a return? Actress Marley Shelton, who first appeared as Deputy Judy Hicks in Scream 4, will also be reprising her role in the new sequel.&nbsp;

<h3>Continuing the Franchise</h3>

Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures have taken over the series from Dimension Films, with the franchise previously grossing over $600 million worldwide. Stepping in for the late <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/people/wes-craven" target="_blank">Wes Craven</a>, who helmed the first four films before dying in 2015, are directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking group Radio Silence (behind last year’s sleeper hit <a href="https://www.etonline.com/movies/ready-or-not" target="_blank">Ready or Not)</a> from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Creator Kevin Williamson, who wrote Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 4 (Ehren Kruger filled in on the third installment), is onboard as an executive producer.&nbsp;

Continuing the franchise without the famed “maestro of horror” Craven, who died&nbsp;in 2015 at the age of 76, was not an easy decision, but any fears the original cast had about the newcomers were quickly squashed.&nbsp;“These two directors who approached me with this project have such great respect for Wes Craven and are directing because of [him] so they really want to honor his work, so that is really lovely,” Campbell gushed.&nbsp;

“I just want them to be true to Wes’ vision,” Arquette remarked. “The filmmakers were fans of the original and it really inspired them,” he added.&nbsp;

<h3>New&nbsp;Faces</h3>

Theirs won’t be the only new faces joining the franchise though. As customary with any Scream entry, a crop of up-and-coming teen stars have been cast as Ghostface’s latest victims.&nbsp;New cast members include<a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/people/jack-quaid" target="_blank"> Jack Quaid</a> (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/tv/the-boys" target="_blank">The Boys</a>) as Richie, Melissa Barrera (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/movies/in-the-heights" target="_blank">In the Heights</a>) as Sam, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/people/jenna-ortega" target="_blank">Jenna Ortega</a> (You) as Tara, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/dylan-minnette" target="_blank">Dylan Minnette</a> (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/tv/13-reasons-why" target="_blank">13 Reasons Why</a>) as Wes, Jasmin Savoy Brown (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/tv/leftovers" target="_blank">The Leftovers)</a>&nbsp;as Mindy, Mason Gooding (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/tv/love-victor" target="_blank">Love, Victor</a>) as Chad and Mikey Madison (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/movies/once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood" target="_blank">Once Upon a Time in Hollywood</a>) as Amber as well as model Sonia Ammar as Liv and comedian Reggie Conquest in an unspecified role.&nbsp;

Additionally, Kyle Gallner, who starred in the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake,&nbsp;has been cast as the mysterious Vince.

“This is a dream come true,” newcomer <a href="https://www.etonline.com/jenna-ortega-calls-role-in-scream-5-a-dream-come-true-reveals-hopes-for-her-you-character-exclusive" target="_blank">Ortega said</a>, while in North Carolina for pre-production on the film. “How incredible that we have the main cast coming back, that is insane,” she continued. “Having seen all of the previous ones, I am very, very pleased with how the script has been written.”&nbsp;

One cast member still seemingly unconfirmed? The one that relates to the&nbsp;iconic opening death scene.&nbsp;Beginning with <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/drew-barrymore" target="_blank">Drew Barrymore</a> in the original, followed by <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/jada-pinkett-smith" target="_blank">Jada Pinkett Smith</a>, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/people/liev-schreiber" target="_blank">Liev Schrieber</a>, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/kristen-bell" target="_blank">Kristen Bell </a>and <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/anna-paquin" target="_blank">Anna Paquin</a> in the sequels, the Scream films famously open with a shocking death scene. (Even <a href="https://www.etonline.com/news/166867_bella_thorne_on_that_scream_spoiler" target="_blank">Bella Thorne was brought in</a> to kick off the MTV series in the same fashion.)&nbsp;

Rumors have been circulating that <a href="https://www.etonline.com/why-scream-5-fans-think-selena-gomez-is-joining-the-cast-151764" target="_blank">Selena Gomez</a> could be filling the role after Cox, Arquette, Ortega and Barrera all noticeably began following the singer on Instagram. But that all could be misleading, especially after the trailer (see below) suggested Ortega may in fact be taking that honor over from Barrymore.&nbsp;

<h3>Filming</h3>

Safety precautions are at an all-time high on the production due to the pandemic. Last September, ET confirmed that three crew members working on Scream 5 tested positive for COVID-19 and were immediately quarantined. Production was not delayed and resumed as scheduled because the crew members were not part of the primary pod which included actors and the directors.&nbsp;

By November, however, the film wrapped production without any other major issues, with Williamson <a href="https://www.etonline.com/scream-franchise-creator-kevin-williamson-reveals-title-of-upcoming-fifth-sequel-156565" target="_blank">officially announcing</a> that Scream 5 would be simply titled Scream.&nbsp;

“That’s a wrap on Scream, which I’m excited to announce is the official title of the next film!” Williamson posted to Instagram alongside a selfie with&nbsp;Campbell and Cox. “Nearly 25 years ago, when I wrote Scream and Wes Craven brought it to life, I could not have imagined the lasting impact it would have on you, the fans. I’m excited for you to return to Woodsboro and get really scared again.”&nbsp;

I’m thrilled to be reunited with Neve, Courteney, David&nbsp;and Marley,&nbsp;and to be working alongside a new filmmaking team and incredible cast of newcomers that have come together to continue Wes’s legacy with the upcoming relaunch of the franchise that I hold so dear to my heart. See you in theatres January 2022.”

<h3>The Plot and Trailer</h3>

According to the film, the official synopsis reads, “Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.”

However, any other details about the plot are being kept under wraps for the new sequel. But when announcing her return, Campbell did provide one hint: “I am beyond excited to step back into the role of Sidney Prescott and return to Woodsboro,” referring to the fictional town setting of Scream and Scream 4. Scream 2 was set at the fictional Windsor College while Scream 3 moved the story to backlots of&nbsp;Hollywood. While it’s not a major reveal, it does imply there will be a return to roots in this relaunch. &nbsp;

“I feel like throughout the years the franchise has done really well at calling back and bringing nostalgic aspects to the script and I’ll definitely say that there are some here,” Ortega shared.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, fans of the franchise have also taken notice of the house in the selfie Williamson snapped with Campbell and Cox. To many, it looks a lot like home where Stu Macher (<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/matthew-lillard" target="_blank">Matthew Lillard</a>) lived and where the final act of killing took place in the first film.&nbsp;

Even though Stu is not expected to return -- he is dead after all -- it didn’t stop Lillard from saying he’d like to be part of the newest film. “I would love to come back,” he <a href="https://www.etonline.com/matthew-lillard-is-down-for-scream-5-why-he-says-it-might-be-complicated-exclusive-146479" target="_blank">told ET in May</a>, ahead of filming. “Actors, for the most part, most of us are out here tap dancing as fast as we can to feed our families and get jobs. So if there was a chance to come back, that made sense, yes.”

What will happen won't be revealed until 2022 as fans continue to dig into every detail they can about the new film as they have done with every previous installment of the franchise.&nbsp;

“I’m so lucky to be a part of these films, I mean, really, really lucky,” Campbell gleefully admitted. “I think it’s a rarity in any actor’s career to have a film that’s that appreciated and loved and respected. I am very grateful to it and very, very grateful for the fans who appreciate it and I know it’ll be a lot of fun to do it again,” she teased.&nbsp;

'Scream 5': Everything We Know About the Anticipated New Sequel (Exclusive)

Michael Myers is an unstoppable killing machine -- but even he wasn’t able to outrun the coronavirus. Halloween Kills, the highly anticipated horror sequel originally set for release on Friday, Oct.&nbsp;16, was delayed a full year due to the global pandemic.

<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/jamie-lee-curtis" target="_blank">Jamie Lee Curtis</a>, who returned as Laurie Strode in the 2018 box office hit <a href="https://www.etonline.com/halloween-40-years-later-jamie-lee-curtis-and-john-carpenter-on-the-films-legacy-exclusive-111023" target="_blank">Halloween</a>, and the upcoming Halloween Kills, also signed on to reprise her role in Halloween Ends, the supposed final chapter of the David Gordon Green-directed trilogy, which has yet to be filmed and was subsequently delayed until 2022.&nbsp;

While speaking exclusively to ET’s Keltie Knight, Curtis voiced her support for the films’ delays.&nbsp;“Without question, no question,” she said in response to fans needing to see these movies in an actual theater when it’s safe to do so.&nbsp;

Despite the delays, the first sequel already completed principal photography last year before the coronavirus pandemic hit. Curtis described the sequel as “very different” from the original 1978 horror classic and its 2018 predecessor.&nbsp;

“It’s very much part of today’s fabric,” Curtis mused. “There’s a lot of rage internal in the town and that is sort of what drives the story, the communal rage which feels obviously timely,” she added, referencing current events.&nbsp;

After the 2018 installment picked up 40 years following the original Halloween, Kills will continue that re-established timeline and include other original characters, Sheriff Leigh Brackett (Charles Cyphers) and Nurse Marion Chambers (Nancy Stephens) as well as Tommy Doyle and Lindsey Wallace, the young children Laurie babysat during her first encounter with The Shape (played both by James Jude Courtney and original actor Nick Castle).&nbsp;

While Brian Andrews played Tommy in the original, with <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/people/paul-rudd" target="_blank">Paul Rudd</a> taking over the role in 1995’s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, Anthony Michael Hall will play the grownup version here. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/kyle-richards" target="_blank">Kyle Richards</a>, now 51, will reprise the role she first played at just eight years old.&nbsp;

“I really wanted to be in the last one so I was really excited they asked me to be a part of this one,” Richards shared with ET about the reprisal over 40 years in the making.&nbsp;

The former child star, who filled in as a guest correspondent during ET’s <a href="https://www.etonline.com/jamie-lee-curtis-reunites-with-halloween-co-star-kyle-richards-40-years-later-exclusive-109714" target="_blank">2018 interview with Curtis</a>, admitted that reunion probably helped her score the sequel gig.&nbsp;“I think it actually did have something to do with it,” she said. “After that, I went to the <a href="https://www.etonline.com/kyle-richards-attends-halloween-premiere-40-years-after-she-was-a-child-star-in-the-original-film" target="_blank">premiere</a>&nbsp;and I was on the red carpet and everybody kept asking, ‘Why wasn’t Kyle involved?’ and I was like, ‘Hey, yeah, why wasn’t I?'"&nbsp;It wasn’t long before her agent called with some good news for the sequel.&nbsp;

Richards, who rocked bangs to recreate Lindsey’s original hairstyle, also dished on her filming experience. “I was a baby!” she quipped about her time on the original set. “When I was little, I didn’t realize what we were making.&nbsp;People always would ask me, did you realize how scary the movie was? No, I didn’t. But I can tell you right now as an adult, it’s really scary, it’s really scary actually making the movie,” she shared.

One thing that didn’t change was her bond with Curtis. “She is just such a great person and she is great to work with and the fact that we are working together after 40 years is so incredible and it made me a little emotional on the last day of filming,” Richards revealed.&nbsp;

“I always told the story about how when I was eight years old and we did the original Halloween, the night I wrapped, she carried me to my dressing room. So when I wrapped this time I said, ‘Jamie, do you remember what you did 40 years ago?’ and she said ‘Yeah I do,’ and she picked me up,” Richards recounted. “It’s very sentimental to me and it’s really exciting to be part of the franchise,” she gushed.&nbsp;

While Richards is making a long-awaited return to the franchise, newcomers <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/people/judy-greer" target="_blank">Judy Greer</a> and Andi Matichak don’t have to wait as long between appearances. Both actresses appeared in the 2018 film as Laurie’s daughter, Karen, and granddaughter, Allyson, respectively. Also returning for Kills is Dylan Arnold as Cameron, whose father, Lonnie (played now by Robert Longstreet), bullied Tommy as a child in 1978.&nbsp;

Even with the delays, fans have had their first look at the film thanks to a behind-the-scenes video Curtis shared on her social media last year. In the short montage, fans were shown a night shoot coming together, Green orchestrating a scene, a child trick-or-treating as cameras roll, a burning house and, of course, the franchise’s masked killer. The video ends with Curtis lying on a stretcher covered in fake blood and offering the camera a smile and proclaiming, "Happy Halloween!"&nbsp;

In addition to&nbsp;a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CCY5IpalmWW/" target="_blank">dramatic short teaser</a> released this summer, Blumhouse dropped another 40-second teaser, offering a hint at how Myers would survive the night after seemingly being trapped in a burning house and left for dead in the climax of the 2018 film and continue his reign of terror. The first look at Kills reveals fire engines rushing toward&nbsp;the house as Laurie frantically screams, “Let it burn!” Meanwhile, the second clip shows more of the cast, including Richards as&nbsp;Lindsey.

While <a href="https://www.etonline.com/judy-greer-talks-action-packed-halloween-sequel-and-into-the-dark-good-boy-exclusive-148021" target="_blank">speaking with ET</a>&nbsp;in the spring, Greer promised the sequel is “action-packed.” “I was always out of breath,” she said, adding the sequel wastes no time getting to the heart of the story. “In that first movie, we were saying hi to our old audience and then introducing ourselves to our new audience, like the generation that maybe didn’t know the original. And in this movie, we’re jumping in, if you catch my drift.”&nbsp;

Fans know there will be no shortage of carnage, thanks to Greer’s Instagrams&nbsp;of her blood-covered hands and bloody prop knives. She revealed she spent days in the same bloody costumes, confirming filming picks up right where they left off in the last film.

As of now, only Curtis is confirmed to return for the next installment, Halloween Ends,&nbsp;which she says has to do with “legacy.” And with no other cast members announced yet, it’s unclear which other characters will survive the night in Kills.&nbsp;

“My guess is that [filming] will probably happen early next year,” Curtis revealed, adding, “I think once they figure out a vaccine and once they figure out the protocols for work, I think we will go back and finish the trilogy.”&nbsp;

Halloween Kills is scheduled to slash into theaters on Oct.&nbsp;15, 2021, with Halloween Ends slated for the following year on Oct.&nbsp;14, 2022.&nbsp;

'Halloween Kills': Everything the Cast Has Said About the Delayed Sequel (Exclusive) 

<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/jamie-lee-curtis" target="_blank">Jamie Lee Curtis</a> is one year older than Psycho, the Alfred Hitchcock classic starring her mother, Janet Leigh, which celebrates its 60th anniversary on Sept. 8. The <a href="https://www.etonline.com/why-jamie-lee-curtis-still-ultimate-scream-queen-89118" target="_blank">ultimate scream&nbsp;queen</a>, who has left an indelible mark&nbsp;on the horror genre since Halloween first premiered in 1978, reflects on Leigh’s iconic&nbsp;performance and how her legacy still holds up decades later.&nbsp;

“Sixty&nbsp;years is a long time,” Curtis muses to ET, before adding that she doesn’t even remember the first time she actually sat down to watch the thriller. “I think when I was a younger actor, I probably made up some story about seeing it somewhere. Honestly, I probably didn’t really see it until I was an adult and really appreciated it.”&nbsp;

There is much to appreciate in <a href="https://decider.com/movie/psycho-1960/" target="_blank">Hitchcock’s slasher</a>, which follows secretary Marion Crane (Leigh), who’s on the run after stealing $40,000 and checks into the remote, roadside Bates Motel run by a young man (Anthony Perkins) dominated by his elderly mother.&nbsp;

“It’s just an amazing movie, it’s just a classic,” Curtis says. “Not only just the execution of the movie in the art form, but also the way that [Hitchcock] released it. There were very specific limits set on how you could see it.”&nbsp;

In a rare move, Hitchcock controlled the promotion of the film. Critics were not given private screenings and buzz was created with a “no late admission” policy. Signs appeared in front of cinemas&nbsp;reading: “We won't allow you to cheat yourself. You must see PSYCHO from the very beginning. Therefore, do not expect to be admitted into the theatre after the start of each performance of the picture. We say no one -- and we mean no one -- not even the manager's brother, the President of the United States, or the Queen of England (God bless her)!”

“Once you were in the theater, you could not leave, they forbade people to leave because they didn’t want to let the secret of the movie out,” Curtis continues. “In today’s world, with social media, it’s very hard to keep secrets in movies and the moment a movie is seen, a thousand people are tweeting about it.”&nbsp;

The actress adds, "Back then, they were able to contain it and I think part of the fear of it was the buildup of this movie that you weren’t allowed to talk about and once you were in there, you couldn’t leave and that just built up.”

That buildup proved well worth the anticipation when, 45 minutes&nbsp;into the film, Leigh’s character is brutally stabbed to death in the shower. A mere 45 seconds that changed everything. Billed as the star of the film, audiences were left reeling that the actress they thought to be untouchable had perished so early on. It proved that anything could happen, a terrifying thought that wouldn’t be replicated to such effect until 36 years later when Drew Barrymore famously died in the opening scene of <a href="https://www.etonline.com/features/205294_scream_20_years_later_neve_campbell_and_cast_share_untold_stories" target="_blank">Scream</a> despite her prominent billing in the film.&nbsp;

Ultimately, Leigh won a Golden Globe and earned an Oscar nomination for&nbsp;Best Supporting Actress. (Psycho earned three additional nominations, including Best Director for Hitchcock.) While the actress went on to star in films like The Manchurian Candidate and Bye Bye Birdie, she eventually returned to the genre that made her -- and eventually her daughter -- an icon.&nbsp;

In the final years of her career, Leigh made appearances in John Carpenter’s The Fog and <a href="https://www.etonline.com/latest/movies/halloween-h20" target="_blank">Halloween H20: 20 Years Later</a>, both of which starred Curtis, before she died in 2004 at the age of 77.&nbsp;

In addition to the nod from Scream, Leigh’s performance has had a lasting impact on Hollywood and the shower scene has been replicated or referenced by modern horror stories in the decades since. And during that time, ET and Leigh revisited her most iconic moment on screen, which took seven working days and 76 shots to complete.&nbsp;

“You can’t really get all of that impact when you are there in the water for seven days and you’re doing what your job requires, but not until I saw it did the full power affect me and, quite truthfully, I cannot take a shower,” the actress shared. &nbsp;

What made the Psycho moment so brilliant is that “[Hitchcock] made an actually innocent shower become evil,” Leigh, who admittedly was not a big shower taker in real life yet never thought of it as anything but safe, explained. “I never thought about anything bad before, a shower was completely normal, until I saw Psycho.”&nbsp;

She added at the time, “I had never consciously thought about it before, how vulnerable you are in a shower. You can’t hear because the water is going, you can’t see because your eyes are closed. You&nbsp;are obviously completely defenseless.”

Despite how she felt about showers, Leigh’s admiration for the film was steadfast. "The reason it was so effective was because at that time we had censorship. You could not show nudity, you could not show graphic violence,” Leigh recalled. “So what Mr. Hitchcock did was bring the audience into the picture so much so that what they saw, their own mind imagined much worse than you can show. Much worse. And that was the secret of Psycho.”&nbsp;

The shower scene, of course, has been recreated many times -- Anne Heche starred in Gus Van Sant’s 1998 shot-for-shot remake, singer <a href="https://www.etonline.com/tv/209082_rihanna_makes_her_bates_motel_debut_watch_first_scene" target="_blank">Rihanna</a> portrayed the role of Marion Crane in A&amp;E’s television prequel series, Bates Motel -- but none have come even close to matching the original iteration. Even Curtis herself <a href="https://www.etonline.com/tv/171992_jamie_lee_curtis_pays_tribute_to_her_mom_on_scream_queens" target="_blank">re-enacted</a> her mother's moment on Ryan Murphy’s horror Fox series, Scream Queens, in 2015.&nbsp;

Despite that, “the scariest movie ever made is probably Psycho,” Curtis previously conceded in 1998, when ET was on set for the Halloween sequel that reunited the two scream queens, with Leigh making a cameo as Norma Watson. “When we were coming back to do this sort of homage movie, it seemed correct to include her. It was very gracious of her to be a part of it. It was my way of homaging her.”

Curtis added at the time, “She is my mother and we both have established ourselves in a career where you would call the high point or pinnacle of career was a horror movie. In my generation, it was a low-budget teenage slasher movie, and in her age, it was an Alfred Hitchcock thriller.”&nbsp;

After Carpenter cast Curtis in Halloween because she was the daughter of Leigh, the actress went on to become synonymous with the horror genre following the success of The Fog, Prom Night, Terror Train as well as the continuation of the <a href="https://www.etonline.com/halloween-40-years-later-jamie-lee-curtis-and-john-carpenter-on-the-films-legacy-exclusive-111023" target="_blank">slasher franchise</a>, which is set to return with two new installments, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/media/videos/jamie-lee-curtis-on-having-to-delay-halloween-kills-until-2021-exclusive-150869" target="_blank">Halloween Kills</a> and <a href="https://www.etonline.com/media/videos/jamie-lee-curtis-on-having-to-delay-halloween-kills-until-2021-exclusive-150869" target="_blank">Halloween Ends</a>.

While her horror resume&nbsp;has easily surpassed her mother’s, the sentiment that Leigh passed the <a href="https://www.etonline.com/top-40-scream-queens-of-past-40-years-jamie-lee-curtis-neve-campbell-111230" target="_blank">scream queen torch</a> on to her loving daughter is not lost on the 61-year-old actress. “I’m very proud to be her daughter," Curtis says. "These big chunks of time are now kind of upon us and it just talks about legacy. It’s just a cool thing that these movies live on all these years later.”&nbsp;
