Bindi Irwin & Family Announce Steve Irwin's Hollywood Walk of Fame Star
Late Australian icon, Steve Irwin, will receive his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Apr. 26.
The wildlife lover’s family announced the news from Beerwah, Australia, on Wednesday and are now preparing to fly to the U.S. for the ceremony.
“This is tremendously exciting and we couldn’t be more proud,” his wife, Terri, said in a video of a press conference posted by Australian media outlet, 7 News. “It’s really a culmination of work from a lot of people, who believe that Steve should totally get this recognition.”
As daughter Bindi stood alongside her mom beaming, Terri then gave a shout-out to tourism organization, Visit Sunshine Coast, who helped with the fee required to get the star, and actor, Russell Crowe.
“Russell Crowe wrote a letter of recommendation that Steve should get this acknowledgment, so it’s just been terrific,” Terri shared.
Irwin was killed by a stingray in 2006, at the age of 44. Fittingly, his star will be cemented in front of the Iguana Vintage Clothing store and Bindi, 19, promised the day will be a “huge party.”
“We’re all going to be there. We may have some surprise visitors as well,” the Dancing with the Stars champ teased.
Brother, Robert, piped in to give away the surprise guests: “We’re actually going to be bringing some really fun animal guests with us, so we’ve got some awesome Australian animals that will be with us at the star. It’s going to be a huge celebration.”
Terri was quick to note that a “lovely friend” in Los Angeles would be providing the Down Under animals, rather than the trio bringing over their zoo.
While fans will have to wait until Apr. 26, to potentially see kangaroos hopping down Hollywood Blvd and koalas climbing up Grauman’s Chinese Theater, Terri said she believes Steve would find the whole honor, “really cool.”
“What Steve [considered] recognition was recognition of conservation and on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, you don’t think, ‘I want to go see a conservationist star!’” she explained. “It doesn’t really come to mind, so I think he would have thought it was really cool for his message [to reach] a tremendous mainstream [audience].”
The family also took to social media to share news of the star ceremony.
“Join us on April 26 to celebrate Dad's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!” Bindi tweeted. “Dad changed the world by reaching out to people through their television screens to bring them on the adventure of a lifetime. We hope to see you in LA!.”
Terri retweeted the post, adding that the family will, of course, wear khaki, just as Steve famously used to.
“Such a tremendous honor,” she added. “You are all invited. You’re also welcome to wear khaki. I know Robert, @BindiIrwin and I will be wearing khaki!”
Crowe also took to Twitter, writing, “A conservationist on the Hollywood walk of fame. Brilliant.”
Known as “the crocodile hunter,” Steve was an icon to many around the world, as well as his homeland of Australia, they clan own Australia Zoo on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
